Attorneys Harvey Birdman, Attorney at Law, Vol. 3

Adult Swim's Harvey Birdman: Attorney at Law may have gone the way of the dodo, but the episodes collected in this third DVD volume feature more animated hysterics from the superhero turned lawyer. In this collection, Harvey (voiced by Gary Cole) has to deal with the death of Phil Ken Sebben (voiced by Stephen Colbert) as well as endure his high school reunion. Birdgirl (voiced by Paget Brewster) also returns, and there's even more insane and hilarious moments to come that make no sense whatsoever. If there's any drawbacks to these episodes, it's that once Colbert departed the show, he was sorely missed to say the least. His vocal talents as Phil Ken Sebben and Reducto was one of the best elements of the show, and while it was incredibly funny how his characters met their demise, his presence was still missed. That aside though, there's still great work from Cole, Thomas Allen as Peanut, the great John Michael Higgins as Mentok, and Chris Edgerly as Potamus. Not to mention that the "Sebben & Sebben Employee Orientation" episode, which spoofs orientation videos for new employees, is worth the price of admission alone. All in all, this is yet another Adult Swim DVD that is an essential pick up.

The premium collection has all the necessary forms for both financial and health care POA and the terminology is easy to understand. It is incredibly difficult to sort through the scant resources available online for determining how to even start with wills, advance directives, etc. My mind thinks naturally in lists and planning, so this book is a great resource for giving you the questions you don't even realize you should be asking yourself. It asks the questions is a sequential manner, with each checklist building on the others, so that toward the end you're able to create a plan of care for your loved on. If you're faced with many ladders of decisions, this a must-read for asking and answering those tough questions.

The most recent main entry in the venerable "Ace Attorney" franchise had one phrase uttered dozens of times throughout its hit-or-miss story: "the dark age of the law." It referred to the fact that corruption in the legal system had become rampant, with forged evidence pushing forward cases in which the "ends justified the means." To a lesser extent, that's how I've felt about the game industry as of late. Giant games boasting most preorders in history or developed by some big, AAA studio who developed some other massive franchise are dominating the market. Trailers with gameplay that is, beyond a shadow of a doubt, fabricated and not indicative of the final product. The ends justify the means, just so long as the big companies get their profit. It's instilled me with a healthy dose of bitter cynicism about gaming in general, and for a while there, I felt like I wasn't going to be able to keep on reviewing games, or pursuing a career in that vein. There just wasn't enough to keep me going.

The tireless Paul Madriani, Martini's popular lawyer/sleuth (The Judge; Compelling Evidence), barely has a chance to hang a shingle in San Diego--where he has moved to be closer to his lover, child advocate Susan McKay--before he is sucked into another engrossing court battle. When Madriani takes on elderly Jonah Hale's case, it seems at first he is dealing with a simple kidnapping. Hale's granddaughter, eight-year-old Amanda, under Hale's custody, has been whisked away by Zolanda Suade, who runs Vanishing Victims, an organization that purports to rescue kids from abusive situations. Now Suade is falsely accusing Hale of molestation to justify returning the girl to her mother--Hale's drug-addled, ex-con daughter, Jessica, who's never shown any interest in raising her child. Suade apparently has an ulterior motive: keeping Amanda in hiding until she can extort a hefty ransom from Hale, who recently won $87 million in the state lottery. Before Madriani, with Susan's expert assistance, can get far in his investigations, Suade is found shot to death, and Hale, who had plenty of motive to kill him, is arrested. Madriani is increasingly overmatched by a dogged prosecutor. Worse, those assisting Madriani in Hale's defense keep getting murdered, and Madriani may be next in line. Except for the occasional cliche (bodies lined up "like cordwood," minds "like steel traps"), Martini's prose shows marked improvement. Crisp dialogue and tart observations about legal maneuvering distinguish his courtroom scenes, and the new setting, San Diego, is colorfully rendered. It's a shame that the otherwise cleverly conceived plot falters in the homestretch with a poorly concealed twist that most readers will see coming well ahead of time.
